Action from the Bloomfield Ulster Championships

The Ulster Championships kicked off in Bangor on Friday 19th Dec with some tremendous results. Thanks to all the swimmers who provided an exciting three days for all involved and a massive thanks to all volunteers and officials who helped over the weekend. Special mention goes to Bangor club who were a great help with setup and take down.

DAY 1

 

This event is one of the toughest in the pool - the 400m Individual Medley and was won by Curtis Coulter from Ards in 4 mins 40 seconds. Curtis was also the fastest junior.  Second was clubmate Darren Bell  clocking 4 mins 43 and the bronze was won by Ryan Wray from Leander - 4.47

  

Sycerika McMahon won the 100m breast setting a new Irish Junior record in a time of 1.09.48 - not too far off the Irish Senior Record time!   Alison Todd from City of Belfast won the silver - 1.12.64 and Ashleigh Hyland got bronze in a time of 1.13.57.

  

The men's 200m freestyle was the race to see.  Ryan Harrison is home for Christmas and set a new Irish Record in a fabulous time of 1.46.34.  Conor Leaney from Larne won the silver - 1.49.81  followed by Iain Chisholm from Leander who won the bronze in a time of 1.50.63

  

In the women's 100m freestyle, Clare Dawson , Bangor, easily won gold in a time of 55.65, the silver was won by Sycerika McMahon - 57.05 and fastest junior and Katie Reid of Lisburn won the bronze in a time of 58.31

  

The men's 100m butterfly was won by Steven McQuillan of Ards - 54.90, silver medal was won by Jordan Leckey in 1.00.32 and Tom Murray won the bronze - 1.00.44

  

Chelsey Wilson (Enniskillen) won the 200m backstroke in a time of 2.13.86,  Katie Reid won another medal - silver , 2.20.25 and Alison Todd ,City of Belfast, won the bronze medal in a time of 2.25.44.  Chelsey's younger sister Courtney Wilson was the fastest junior.

  

The men's 200m breaststroke was won by Michael Dawson from Ards  - 2.15.32, Simon Dickson (Bangor) won silver, 2.25.87 and the bronze medal was won by Larne's Mark Wylie - 2.26.74.  Mark was the fastest junior in this event.

  

The next event was the women's 200m Individual Medley and was won by Sycerika McMahon - 2.17.14.  Alison Todd (C.o.Belfast) took silver - 2.20.16 and Rachel Ellis from Enniskillen won the bronze in a time of 2.34.51

  In the sprint events, Clare Dawson (Bangor) won the women's 50m butterfly - 28.62, Emily Heyburn (C.o.Belfast) took silver - 29.23 and the bronze medal was won by Sarah Henderson from Bangor in a time of 30.65

Men's 50m backstroke was won by Bangor swimmer Jordan Sloan in a  very fast time of 26.85.  Luke Campbell (Ards) won the silver in a time of 28.09 and Ciaran Sloan from Coleraine won the bronze in a time of 29.47

  The final events were the 4 x 200m freestyle relays.In the women's, Bangor were 1st, City of Belfast 2nd and Lisburn were 3rd.

Men's was won by Leander, 2nd were Ards and Bangor 3rd.  Leander Team set a new Irish record in this event.

   

DAY 2 AND DAY 3

 

The first event of the day was the women’s 100m Individual Medley and true to form young Sycerika McMahon from Leander won the gold medal in a time of 1.04.00.   Ashleigh Hyland, Bangor, took the silver medal in a time of 1.05.15 and the bronze medal went to Alison Todd from C.o.Belfast – 1.06.37. 

  

The 2nd final was the men’s 1500m freestyle – 60 long lengths of the pool and Conor Donnelly from Leander who has had a great championship won the gold medal in a time of 15.34.69 setting a new Ulster Junior record.  Russell White from Lisburn came 2nd, his time was 17.32.00.

  

The women’s 400 freestyle was won by Donna~Marie O’Prey (Larne) – 4.36.67, Jenna Orr from Bangor took silver – 4.38.26 followed closely by clubmate Erin McCreedy – 4.38.57.

  

The gold medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke was Simon Dickson, Bangor, - 1.05.09, Silver went to Mark Wylie, Larne - 1.05.17 and the bronze medal was won by David Stronge from C.o.Belfast – 1.07.01

  

In the women’s 200m breaststroke, Sycerika McMahon got another gold medal to add to her large collection.  Alison Todd who has had some fabulous swims this weekend, won the silver medal – 2.36.25 and Ashleigh Dickson from Bangor won the bronze in a time of 2.49.07.

  

In the men’s 200m Individual Medley Ryan Wray, Leander won the gold medal – 2.11.84 and Adam Matthews took silver in a time of 2.13.59 while Mark Angus from Bangor won a bronze – 2.20.80

  

The women’s 50m freestyle was a very exciting race with a very close finish.  Ashleigh Hyland won the gold – 26.50 and clubmate Clare Dawson was right beside her in a time of 26.54.  Sycerika McMahon finished closely on their heels in a time of 26.70.

  

The men’s 100m freestyle was another exciting race – Conor Leaney of Larne won gold in a time of 50.9 and Craig Meek and Iain Chisholm, both from Leander , got joint silver – both clocking 51.38.

  The women’s 50m backstroke saw Chelsey Wilson winning in a time of 29.97, silver went to Katie Reid from Lisburn 30.21 – who has produced some great swims this weekend, and the bronze was won by Sarah Henderson from Bangor – 33.90  

Men’s 200m backstroke was led from the start by Jordan Sloan – Jordan’s time was 2.09.14.  2nd in was Luke Campbell, Ards, in a time of 2.12.08 and the bronze medal went to Darren Bell also from Ards in a time of 2.12.60

  

The women’s 200m butterfly saw Sycerika McMahon and Alison Todd in yet another final – these 2 girls have swum multiple events!

 

Sycerika came first – 2.17.90, Alison was 2nd – 2.19.80 and 14 year old Jemma Bingham from Lisburn took the bronze medal in a time of 2.35.12

  

The sprint 50m butterfly was won by Steven McQuillan, Ards, - 24.94.  The silver went to Conor Leaney, Larne, - 25.76 and Matthew Harkness from Leander picked up the bronze in a time of 26.88

  The final event of the evening was the 4 x 100m medley team relay. In the women’s race, it was 1st Bangor, 2nd C.o.Belfast and 3rd Lisburn.

In the men’s event, Leander got the gold, Bangor – silver and Larne picked up the bronze.

  There were 10 years / under Junior relays on Saturday afternoon. In the Girls Medley it was 1. Lisburn, 2. Templemore, 3. Bangor. Boys Medley – 1. Ards, 2 Bangor. In the 4 x 50m freestyle relay, Templemore came 1st, Lisburn 2nd and Bangor 3rd.  In the boys, Ards were 1st and Bangor 2nd.  

On Sunday morning, the swimmers travelled through the snow to get to the competition and it certainly didn’t slow them down!

  

The 1st final of the evening was the men’s 100m Individual Medley in which Ards club took 1,2,3.  The gold was won by Steven McQuillan – 57.48, the silver went to Darren Bell – 1.01.98 and Curtis Coulter’s time for the bronze medal was 1.01.99.

  

The women’s 400m Individual – a very tough event was won by Sycerika McMahon – 4.49.56, the silver went to Alison Todd  ( 5.00.87) and Jemma Bingham, Lisburn won the bronze – 5.27.80

  

Jordan Sloan set a new Ulster Junior Record in the 100m backstroke with a superb swim - 58.75, Tom Murray from Riversdale Otters (Strabane) won the silver, clocking a time of 1.01.01 and Conor Hillick (City of Derry) took the bronze medal in a time of 1.03.26

  

Alison Todd was in the pool again, this time swimming the 100m butterfly and winning gold in a time of 1.03.54, Chelsey Wilson was 2nd with a time of 1.04.69 and Emily Heyburn took bronze – 1.04.77

  

Conor Donnelly set another junior Ulster record, this time in the 400m freestyle – 3.56.31 while Matthew Harkness and Adam Matthews battled for silver and bronze with Matthew just touching first – 4.15.46 and Adam clocking 4.15.77

  

Melanie Nocher was in winning form today in the 200m freestyle – 1.58.90, Sycerika McMahon took the silver in a time of 2.01.60 and Alison Todd the bronze – 2.04.18.

  

The men’s 50m freestyle was over in a flash – Conor Leaney 1st – 23.07, chased by Craig Meek (Leander) – 23.66 and Gavin Williamson (Larne) won the bronze – 23.74.  Curtis Coulter from Ards won the fastest junior in a time of 24.27

  

The women’s 50m breast saw Sycerika setting another Junior Ulster Record – 32.08, Ashleigh Hyland won the silver – 32.94 and young Grace Hammond took the bronze in a time of 35.98

  

The men’s 200m butterfly was won in a very fast time of 2.07.75 by Iain Chisholm from Leander club.  Simon Dickson (Bangor) took silver – 2.19.60 and Olan Derry from Lisburn won the bronze in a time of 2.20.40. Clubmate Russell White was the fastest junior in a time of 2.22.83

  The Wilson girls from Enniskillen dominated the 100m backstroke with Chelsey winning in a time of 1.02.29 and young sister Courtney getting the bronze – 1.09.22

Katie Reid from Lisburn  had a great swim to take the silver in a time of 1.05.41

  

The men’s 50m breaststroke saw Michael Dawson winning – 29.39, Simon Dickson (Bangor) won silver – 30.14 and David Stronge from C.o.B took the bronze – 30.99

  The 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay events were as follows;Women’s;Gold – Bangor, Silver – C.o.Belfast, Bronze – Lisburn.

Men’s; Gold – Leander, Silver – Larne, Bronze – Ards and Bangor boy’s won a Junior Gold medal

  The 11/12 year old relays were part of this afternoon’s programme, adding an atmosphere of excitement to the finals.  In the 4 x 50m  Girl’s Medley,Lisburn took Gold, Bangor the silver and Ards got the bronze.The boys finished; 1. Ards, 2. Bangor and 3. Lisburn. In the freestyle event, the Lisburn girls took another gold, Bangor the silver and the Lisburn B team took the bronze!

The boys finished 1. Ards, 2. Lisburn, 3. Bangor

  At the end of these presentations, it was announced that 2 trophies were to be awarded – one was for the swimmer who broke the Irish record by the biggest per centage. This went to Ryan Harrison.  Ryan is at the University of Tennessee and is home for Christmas.  The trophy for the best junior performance – no prizes for guessing – went to Sycerika McMahon.
