Child Welfare
Safeguarding Children in Swimming

Thank you for taking time to visit Swim Ulster’s Safeguarding section. This section was developed by Swim Ulster in partnership with the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU).

Swimming is an every-day activity for many children and makes a significant contribution to their well being and development.  All clubs have a duty to promote a positive experience of swimming and safeguard children from abuse within our sport.  They also have a role in recognising and responding to concerns that a child may be being harmed within another setting.  By encouraging all clubs to implement the Swim Irelands Guidelines for Safeguarding Children 2008 we believe that everyone in swimming will benefit – children, parents/guardians and leaders. This document is based on the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sport.

Whats Clubs Should Do

To assist your club in developing a culture where a child can feel safe and a parent / guardian knows that your club prioritises the welfare of their child, Swim Ulster have developed the following advice about what to put in place based on the 6 Standards set out in “Getting it Right”

  • Recruitment and selection (4);
  • Effective Management of Staff and Volunteers (5)
  • Reporting Guidelines that are communicated to all involved in the club(6)
  • Code of Behaviour (7)
  • Sharing Information (8)
  • General Safety and Management of Activities (9)

What Swim Ulster are Doing

Swim Ulster have registered with AccessNI to assist in the recruitment process for all those involved in swimming. Swim Ulster will not be issuing coaching certificates without completing an AccessNI check to assist in assessing the suitability of a coach to work with young people. By using this checking service Swim Ulster are reassuring parents that those working with their children do not have a known history of harming children. This check should also reassure our coaches that those they are working alongside are to the best of the SU’s knowledge appropriate to work with children.

Effective Management of Staff and Volunteers

Good management of staff/volunteers will contribute to safe activities for children. Good management will also create an atmosphere where staff and volunteers feel valued, are listened to and where issues can be dealt with quickly by systems already in place.

Code of Behaviour which Includes the Following

It is likely that your club/ organisation will already be engaged in good practice.

However it is essential that everyone involved in your club/ organisation knows what behaviour is acceptable and what is not. The first thing that any club needs to have in place are Guidelines of Good Practice, also know as a Code of Conduct.  This is the cornerstone of any good safeguarding policy.  Without a standard for coaches / parents / children to adhere to you are leaving your club/ organisation vulnerable and open to challenge about behaviour or actions of individuals within your club.
