Who we are

Swim Ulster is part of the Swim Ireland family and is recognised by Sport NI as the governing body for aquatic sports in Ulster. We have 3,500 members in 40 clubs involved with swimming, water polo and diving.

Swim Ulster's mission is to create a culture where champions are inevitable. Our mission is directly aligned with Swim Irelands vision of swimming as 'A Sport for Life for All'.

The Company

Swim Ulster Ltd (originally founded in 1893 as the Ulster Branch of the Irish Amateur Swimming Association) was establised in 2005 as a company limited by guarantee. The company remains affiliated to Swim Ireland under the FINA rules.

A non profit making company, Swim Ulster operates within the framework defined in its Memorandum and Articles of Association. These identify the members of the company as being drawn to from swimming, water polo, diving and synchronised swimming clubs in Ulster that are affiliated to Swim Ireland.

Volunteers and Committees

Swim Ulster delivers its services to 40 member clubs and 3,500 members throughout the nine counties of Ulster. With a staff complement of three, the organisation relies heavily on the numerous volunteers throughout the province who contribute an estimated 20,000 hours of volunteers time per year. This results in an estimated £200k of contribution in kind.

Volunteers contribute to the fulfilment of Swim Ulster services by, for example, providing:

  • coaching/teaching
  • child protection duties
  • management & administration of clubs
  • providing transport of club members
  • organising galas
  • officiating at galas (referees, stroke judges, timekeepers etc)

Anti-Doping

Anti-doping is the fight against doping in all its forms. Swim Ulster members must be fully compliant with Swim Ireland's policy that 'doping is contrary to the spirit of sport and every member of Swim Ireland has a duty to ensure that the sport is free of doping'.

Child Welfare Guidelines

All clubs must ensure they are following current best practice as identified by the 'Swim Ireland Guidelines for Safeguarding Children 2008'. These guidelines are the essential reference point for clubs to ensure the welfare of children is paramount within the club environment and for those working with children in the aquatic disciplines. NSPCC Child Welfare Helpline service

The NSPCC is urging professionals working with young people to call their free Helpline if they are ever uncertain about a child’s welfare.  Working regularly with children and young people, it is important to have a clear child protection procedure to follow if a child discloses abuse but, it may not always feel that simple.
